The works in "war situation" bring together two sets of photographs. Distant photography of "Reim" military camp, in the Gaza strip area, which was built for the assignment of "hitnatkut", the separation from the Gaza Strip, and was dissembled after the assignment was completed. The second, photographs of policemen, in what appears as poses of aggression.
At first glance, the images may appear pastoral and magical; The "Reim" military camp appears as an additional plateau in the wide and green fields' landscape. The photographed policemen may first appear as toy soldiers but the green lighting brings to mind night vision used in military actions. Both cases bring about the motif of revelation, and with it the awakening from a peaceful dream.
The name of the work is taken from the poem "War Situation", written by Israeli poet Maya Bejerano, which deals with the constant presence of war, which "twists itself into every hole". Kuper's photographs being a tangible expression of the hidden face of war, which accompanies Israeli society at all times. |
